WebTrends launched in 1993 as the first web analytics product. Urchin Software Corporation developed a more sophisticated tracking system that Google acquired in 2005, relaunching it as Google Analytics — which became the world's most widely used analytics platform almost overnight. The transition from Universal Analytics to GA4 in 2023 represented the most significant shift in digital measurement in a decade, moving from session-based tracking to an event-based model better suited to cross-device, multi-platform consumer journeys.
